Today’s figures for Government debt underline the failures of six years of austerity spending cuts - Peter Dowd
Peter Dowd MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, responding to the ONS public sector finance figures today, which showed public sector net debt rising, said:
“Today’s figures for Government debt underline the failures of six years
of austerity spending cuts. Despite the huge sacrifices made, the Government’s
debt burden continues to rise on the back of an economy that is underperforming
for too many of us and a Government that is underprepared for the shock of
Brexit.
"Despite the initial rhetoric, Theresa May now says she wants to stick to
former Chancellor George Osborne’s failed spending cuts, meaning that a lost
decade of earnings will continue for most and more families will be pushed into
poverty.
"It’s time for the Government to change direction and reverse its planned cuts to investment, and as Labour has set out lay the foundations for the high-tech, high-wage economy of the future where no one is left behind.”
